Luckily, there are many home remedies to manage these critters. Keep them at bay with these 10 all-natural spider repellents:

1. Peppermint essential oil, dishwashing liquid. Add 3 cups water, 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid, and 1 tablespoon peppermint essential oil to a spray bottle. Shake and spray. ehowhome reminds us this formula is a spider repellent, not a spider killer.

2. Cinnamon. Sprinkle cinnamon around the perimeter of your house to prevent spiders from coming inside, as recommended by Common Sense Homestead.

3. Minty cotton balls. Dip cotton balls in mint essential oil and place them underneath or outside your home, says Common Sense Homestead.

4. Chestnuts. Common Sense Homestead recommends keeping chestnuts on your window sill to deter spiders.

5. Salt water. Common Sense Homestead says salt water is an excellent spider killer. Spray a solution made from 1 gallon of warm water and 1 ounce salt directly onto spiders and spider nests.

6. White vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and water and use the mixture to spray cracks and crannies, says Natural Living Ideas.

7. Citrus peel. Rub citrus peels on baseboards, windowsills, and bookshelves to prevent spiders from coming in the house. Natural Living Ideas says spiders detest citrus with such fervor, even lemon scented furniture polish will do the trick.

8. Cedar hangers. If you find spiders lurking in your closet, switch to cedar hangers, as suggested by Natural Living Ideas.

9. Tobacco. Spiders know to stay away from tobacco. To make an effective spider repellent, Oh Simply suggests mixing tobacco with water and spraying it on home entry points.

10. Coconut oil. It really does cure everything, doesn't it? Oh Simply says mixing 1 part coconut oil with 2 parts water can prevent spiders from intruding.

Holiday Household Pet Tips

10/26/2016

Holidays are in full swing. As you get ready to decorate for the season, pull out the blankets for these cold nights, and dress your pup up in his best winter gear, don’t forget to keep an eye on the items in your house that are dangerous to dogs and cats.
Top 6 Household Threats To Your Pet
  1. Gum – the sweetener in gum, xylitol, can be lethal to dogs and cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar. When your friends and family come over for the holidays, make sure to put their coats and bags in a room where your pet can’t go and snoop through the pockets and accidentally eat some gum.
  2. Tinsel – cats tend to chew on tinsel and play with it. Eating this stuff can cause intestinal issues such an inflammation of the stomach lining. Keep tinsel and ribbons away from pets, or think about using something else to decorate the tree this year.
  3. Chocolate – dogs tend to love eating chocolate, licking the glass of soda, and slurping your coffee. The problem is these items contain methylxanthine which can cause major problems in the stomach and abnormal heart rates. Keep the treats far away from your pet.
  4. Non-stick/Teflon cookware – After baking or making some yummy foods, make sure that the pots and pans are in the sink or dishwasher and that your house is well-ventilated.The chemicals released into the air from non-stick cookware can harm pet birds, causing breathing issues and fluid buildup. Maybe try using stainless steel or glassware. It’s also better for you.
  5. Bones and leftovers – poultry bones can splinter if your pet chews on them. The splinters can poke the stomach lining or harm their throat. Throw those bones away! As for leftovers, some of our foods will have spices and seasoning that can cause digestive issues in our pets. No leftovers for Max.
  6. Electrical cords – rabbits, dogs, and cats may chew on cords which means they could be electrocuted. Tape down the cords, hide them, or cover them up as best you can. Some house ware stores sell a plastic tube that you can wrap around wires. If you put up a Christmas tree, use a tree skirt to hide the wires.

Ciscoe helps us get rid of fruit flies

Ciscoe Morris demonstrates different ways to get rid of fruit flies, including a new plant he just discovered!
Don't let fruit flies ruin your harvest.
It's amazing how fast fruit flies move in (and how annoying these embarrassing pests can be) when you bring your harvest of homegrown fruit into the kitchen.  Fortunately, there are environmentally friendly ways that will rid your home of the pesky invaders.  Begin by making sure that all sink drains are clean.  If possible, cover fruit in airtight containers or store it in the fridge, although it's often necessary to leave fruit such as pears and tomatoes on the counter to allow them to ripen.  Make a highly effective fruit fly trap by placing cracked and slightly overripe tomatoes in a plastic tub.  Cover the tomatoes about 1/3 deep with vinegar.  Put the lid on the container and poke gazillions of pen point sized holes in the lid.  Place near the fruit and replace when it gets gross.
Another simple trap consists of a bowl of sweet wine and drop just a touch of dish soap on top.  Barely touch the surface of the wine at the center with your fingertip to break the surface tension.  The fruit flies will be attracted by the scent of the wine, get stuck in the soap and it's goodbye Charlie.
Another trap is to use apple cider vinegar.  Heat up a half cup or so of apple cider vinegar and pour it into a jar- it just needs to be deep enough for the flies to drown-and add a drop or two of dish soap. The dish soap will break the surface tension of the liquid so the flies can’t just sit on top and fly away when they’re done. Roll up a piece of paper and insert it into the mouth of the jar to form a makeshift funnel and tape it in place. The flies will go into the jar to get at the vinegar but won’t be able to figure out how to get out, and will drown.
For fun, supplement your fruit fly control program by growing a couple of sundews (Drosera) in your kitchen. Place the pots in a saucer filled with enough water so that the bottom quarter of the roots remain submerged.  The sticky leaves secrete sweet juices that attract and then digest fruit flies (and a lot of other interesting bugs) by the gazillions.
You can also buy non-toxic fruit fly traps at Ace Hardware  According to folks who have used them, they are highly effective.
I've also heard, but haven't had time to test the theory, that placing a sprig of rosemary in with the fruit makes the flies go away.
Finally, to knock down populations quickly, use your vacuum cleaner hose attachment to suck the flies out of the air.  This method is so much fun; you'll actually be disappointed when all the flies are gone.
Good hunting!
